Pop-locking is a collective term for popping and locking, two street dance styles that evolved in California during the 1970s. The term originated in Los Angeles as a street terminology to describe those who Pop and also Lock. Although it is claimed that it is an incorrect term, many pioneers that lived this dance on the streets in LA in the early 80's referred to Popping and Locking as "Pop-lockin. Many Pioneers like One armed Bandit, Nobone Tyrone and the Pomona Wavemasters, [Waveomatic], etc have been using this term to describe the way they dance. It is seen more as a life style than a terminology in the eyes of the OGs in Los Angeles."The term has been criticized as the two dances are very different in appearance and should not be confused as one and the same dance style.[1] The Electric Boogaloos encourage the use of the umbrella term funk styles,[2] which has the same meaning as pop-locking but does not mix the names of the styles.
